Becoming a host family is easy and fun! Our students tend to be teenagers who want to learn English although we have some adults and some younger students from time to time. We need families who are friendly and welcoming and prepared to share their lives with a child from a different culture. In return we pay a daily fee and provide help and support from our Local Organisers in your community.
On most SUL courses the students leave the house at around 8am, for lessons and excursions, and return at around 6pm from Monday to Saturday. They spend Sunday with you and your family.
You can host between 1 and 4 students at any time depending on the course but our standard courses will tend to have two students in the household. Our courses run during term and holiday time, in some locations we can offer up to 14 weeks’ hosting or more per year.
Immersion Host Family
An immersion host family looks after a single student (or occasionally more than one) 24 hours a day – the student lives with you and your family.
If you have teaching qualifications, you can apply to become a teaching immersion but we also need non-teaching immersion families who are happy to share their lives with a foreign student (mostly teenagers). To host immersion students an adult needs to be available to look after them all day.
Apply to become a Host Family
You will need a CRB/DBS check, a smoke alarm and CO (Carbon Monoxide) alarm and a current boiler check as well as to tell your insurer that you are hosting.
